Christopher "Chris" Miles is a fictional character in the television series Skins, and was portrayed by Joe Dempsie.
Chris's character was initially portrayed as being very into pills and as being something of a hedonist, but at the same time had other layers to his personality. According to the official Skins website, he will "smoke/screw/rob/snort anything". Despite paying little heed to his teachers nor caring about his academics, he is very keen on going to his psychology lessons as he has feelings for his teacher, Angie, who is described as being "out of this world" in Chris's eyes. He later falls for Jal.
He is almost always with any of his three friends, Maxxie Oliver, Anwar Kharral and Cassie Ainsworth . Chris is also shown as having great admiration for his late older brother, and it is made clear that his brother is the only member of his family who actually took care of Chris consistently. Chris feels like he cannot compare to him.
Chris is shown giving pills and other unidentified materials to his pet fish; Tony is often intrigued by the strange behavior they display as a result. In series 2, Chris moves in with his newly arrived best friend, Cassie Ainsworth, after he is expelled for bad behavior. In his profile on E4's website, he says that he enjoys listening 1970's emo music and the pop of the 1980's, and that he doesn't like TV at all; he considers it as "[...]a box with images in it." He also shares this opinion with his friends in the first season, when he tells them that they 'watch too much tv'. However, when challenged about his own hobbies, he can only come up with 'pills' and 'shagging' as alternatives to watching television.
Although Chris is often irresponsible, careless about his health, indifferent to his education and often skirts the law, he is also shown to be exceptionally open-minded. He makes friends quickly and is the least easily offended or hurt of the group, despite usually being the one who starts any brawls that occur. When he does take offense, he is usually the quickest to forgive. In return, despite sometimes being irritated by his wild and careless behavior, the rest of the gang are particularly affectionate toward Chris; the only two who have shown righteous anger to him have been Cassie (who was jealous of his new relationship when hers had just fallen apart) and Jal (because he had a brief, impulsive fling with Angie while they were beginning their relationship). His indifference to the problems that plague his life - which he openly admits to being a mask and distraction from the pain he feels over his family falling apart - does not prevent him from giving his friends support and compassion when they need it.
Toward the end of the second series, in the months before his unexpected death, Chris makes strong attempts to bringing structure back into his life. He holds a job, locates a place to live (albeit squatting), and begins a committed relationship with Jal, who challenged him to care about the things that occur in his life rather than simply saying 'fuck it' and having been inspired by her own willingness to change her life for the better by saying 'yes' to life and love.
In "Tony" he is convinced by his friend Maxxie Oliver, to go to a "big gay night out" along with Anwar Kharral, but being bored they eventually go to Abigail Stock's party instead, where he and an overweight Polish girl have wild sex. His flirtatious relationship with his Welsh psychology teacher, Angie, is also made apparent.
In "Cassie" he accidentally sees Angie naked in the teachers' showers, and later apologises.
The episode "Chris" develops his character the most. He wakes up one morning having taken viagra which he did not need the night before, and comes downstairs to find his mum has run away and given him £1000 to live off. After wasting the money on a huge party, and embarrassing himself with his erection in front of Angie who came to the party, he finds himself homeless after he is kicked out by a squatter who is living in his stripped-down house, of which he had to sell the contents.
Chris is homeless and naked. He walks to school naked and goes to Angie for help and advice. His friends arrive and give him clothes, which Cassie Ainsworth and Maxxie charmed from boys in Unseen Skins' accompanying episode "A Friend in Need". Jal Fazer takes him to see his dad who doesn't want anything to do with him or his mother, who is implied to be mentally unstable. Chris accidentally drops his baby half-brother, and runs as fast as he can to the graveyard, where he explains to Jal about his late older brother, Peter. In the episode's conclusion, he is put up to live in a dorm room by a sympathetic Angie.
Eventually, in "Maxxie and Anwar", Chris and Angie admit their feelings for each other. After fellow teacher Tom talks badly to Angie - who he could not seduce, Chris tries to cheer her up and they end up kissing, which leads to sex. They are caught by Maxxie, who is visibly shocked and hurriedly closes the door.
Chris and Angie's relationship progresses throughout the series, until the series finale, where the return of Angie's fiancé Merve completely destroys their relationship, Chris realizing he may lose Angie for good. He concludes that Merve is "obviously gay", after watching a video tape of Angie's showing Merve as a campy weatherman on Australian television. Eventually Chris takes Angie's engagement ring, and is confronted by Merve and two of his friends, and told to give it back. Chris denies he has it, and it is only when Angie eventually bursts in, and asks Chris to return it, does he comply. However, when he gives the ring back, Chris drops it, probably accidentally, and kneels down to pick it up, causing Anwar's uncle to think that Chris is proposing. Angie takes the ring, and runs off, leaving both Chris and Merve opposite one another. After she runs away, Chris comes to the conclusion that she loves him, and thus earns a punch from Merve, starting a minor brawl. In the closing montage, he and Angie are seen staring at each other with sad expressions through a window.
The Lost WeeksEdit
In Chris's lost week webisode, he is seen recording a message to Angie, who he is still trying to get to talk to him.
In "Tony and Maxxie", Chris is seen with Maxxie and Jal trying to comfort and look after Tony Stonem following his accident. That night, they go to a party which they have tried to keep Tony from finding out about.
In "Sketch", Chris learns that Angie has decided not to return to teach her class. She leaves a private message to Chris in code, but does not say goodbye to him explicitly. Chris is upset and confused about this, as he had been looking forward to Angie coming back, partly so that they could see each other again. ? When the others arrive at the Oscars Party in costume, Chris shocks all of them when he arrives in a rickshaw as Miss Daisy, complete with Kenneth dressed as Morgan Freeman/ Hake.
In "Michelle", he goes on the camping trip for Michelle Richardson's birthday, and is attracted to her stepsister, Scarlett and spends the weekend complimenting her and looking at her breasts. Jal causes him considerable genital pain for forgetting to attatch the tents to the car.
In "Chris", Chris is expelled from the college due to his many sexual and unsanitary transgressions, and forced to leave his student flat. Jal and Chris make a deal that Chris will give his life a go and stop saying 'fuck it' and Jal will stop saying no to everything in her social life. After a number of unsuccessful jobs, Chris then gets a job as a sales person and squats in one of the cheaper houses he is supposed to be selling, where Cassie moves in temporarily. Inevitably him and Jal end up entering a romantc relationship, and Chris' life begins to straighten up. He is performing the best at work due to his ability to present the opportunities houses can offer to familial relationships, and with the support and affection from Jal, is genuinely happy for a change. However things lead to much chaos when Cassie decides to have a house-warming party at the house and Angie turns up. The two have sex in the bathroom, however Chris abruptly stops when he thinks of Jal. When coming out of the bathroom, Jal is there and puts two and two together. The wildness of the party costs Chris his home as well as his job, much to the sorrow of his boss. However, when Cassie shows remorse for causing all of it Chris forgives her immediately, recognizing that she is in pain over her split with Sid, and that he eventually would have done something stupid anyway.
Chris then attempts to get Jal back and invites her round to the flat that Angie has left him before leaving; presumably, she felt guilty about intruding in his life after he had just gotten it settled. Chris and Jal get back together after a long argument, however he doesn't yet know that Jal is pregnant, presumably with his baby.
In "Effy, Chris, having allowed Cassie to tak up residence in his apartment, tries to ward off Sid when he comes to confront Cassie. Cassie tells him it is all right, and he leaves the room, although he can clearly hear their arguments. When Chris returns to check on them, they are snogging on the sofa; he grins and remarks "Smokin'!"
In "Jal", Chris increasingly implores Jal to move in with him; despite their relationship being strong, Jal is too torn to decide, as her father dissaproves of Chris and she has not yet told Chris she is pregnant- something that Cassie urges her to do, as secrets can damage relationships. Jal returns from her audition, intent on finally saying yes, to find Chris has been taken to hospital because he has suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a result of the hereditary condition that his brother died of previously. It is said that Chris kept this a secret from Jal, in fear that she wouldn't want to be with him anymore, and that the only person he told was Cassie. Jal tells a comatose Chris she is pregnant and gives him her lucky coin to take into the operation.
In "Cassie", Chris has returned home from the hospital, and intends on getting better. Although he immediately returns to his cheerful, shameless personality (and his habit of smoking pot), the near-death experience has shaken him, and he has resolved not to keep any more secrets from Jal and to reduce his constant consumption of drugs. The episode develops his friendship with Cassie quite a bit, as she is the one who takes care of him. She tricks Sid into trying to change Chris' dressings unneccesarily; as they were in an embarrasing location, Sid recieved a black eye from what Chris amusedly claimed was 'reflex action'. That evening, five of the group attend a meal Sid cooked to celebrate his reunion with Cassie, the end of exams and Chris' recovery, but the meal is marred by Cassie's hostility toward Michelle, and only Chris really enjoys himself or finishes his spaghetti. Chris later finds out from Michelle, that Jal is pregnant, and Jal tells him that she plans to abort the baby.
Later, Cassie goes to check on him about the news, and Chris pretends to be fine, claiming that Jal is all he has, so he will unquestionably be on her side, and that in any case he feels that he would not be a good father, having never had a good role model. Cassie later goes outside, and sees Chris's mum briefly, and quickly hurries inside to get him, but decides not to, as she overhears him sobbing in his room because she would not come in to see him. The two talk again, and share a cup of tea and some spliff; Cassie then gives him a 'Monkey Man' T-shirt, in reference to his self-declared nickname. Chris is delighted by the shirt and hastily puts it on, claiming he cannot wait to show it to someone; then he panics, because he cannot remember his girlfriend's name Chris suddenly becomes ill and has a seizure, dying in Cassie's arms from a second subarachnoid hemorrhage that causes him to bleed from the nose and mouth; in his last moments, he remembers Jal's name. In the aftermath of the loss of her best friend, Cassie flees to New York.
In "Final Goodbyes", Chris' father forbids Chris' friends from attending his funeral, so Tony and Sid decide to steal his body to hold their own funeral. However, Jal is distressed at this idea and she and Michelle persuade them to return the coffin to the hearse. Chris' friends decide to watch the funeral from the nearby roadside, whilst Jal makes the following speech comparing Chris to one of his heroes, Captain Joe Kittinger, and referencing Kittinger's Project Excelsior.
- "I've been thinking about what Chris would have wanted me to say today. The advice he'd give me, which'd be something like, 'Know what, babe? Fuck it. These guys know all about me. Tell them about someone else.' So I thought I'd tell you about a hero of Chris': a man called Captain Joe Kittinger. In 1960, climbing into a foil balloon, Captain Joe ascended 32 kilometers into the stratosphere. And then, armed only with a parachute, he jumped out. He fell for four minutes and thirty-six seconds, reaching seven hundred and forty miles per hour before opening his parachute five kilometers above the Earth. It had never been done before, and it's never been done since. He did it just because he could. And that's why Chris loved him - because the thing about Chris was, he said yes. He said yes to everything. He loved everyone. And he was the bravest boy - man - I knew. And that was - he flung himself out of a foil balloon every day. Because he could. Because he was. And that's why - and that's why we - we loved him."—Jal
After Jal had finished her speech (which Chris' father listened to over the funeral proceedings), the friends set off several bright pink fireworks to say goodbye in their own way. Later, Jal and Graham Miles have an amiable conversation in front of Chris's much- bedecked grave. Maxxie later attempted to draw off Chris' willingness to take any opportunity with the phrase 'fuck it' when he convinced Anwar to join him and James in London.
Cook is now staying in Chris's old dorm room, shown by the graffiti and the picture of the goldfish on the walls. This seems fitting, as Cook is very similar to Chris - constantly consuming drugs/women, using indifference to his life as a mask for the pain he feels over his broken family- except that Cook has a much smaller circle of true friends, as ultimately only JJ, Freddie, Naomi and Effy have a strong connection with him
