Elizabeth "Effy" Stonem was a fictional character in the television series Skins, and was portrayed by Kaya Scodelario.
Characterization
Effy is Tony Stonem's tearaway sister and one of the only people who he truly cares about. She is characterised as beautiful and mysterious.Tony appears proud that she sneaks out of the house to go partying, and more than once has helped her to deceive their parents. The official website sets her apart by referring to the primary cast as "sugar and spice and all things nice", as compared to "Tony's little sister and her shadowy ways." It is clear that she enjoys going out at night to party in skimpy, sexy outfits. She is less manipulative than Tony, but shows the darker side of her personality more frequently. She also rarely speaks in the first series. The seventh episode, "Effy" is the first one in which she speaks, when she describes how she feels about others. Born on 7 of June, she laments:
- "Sometimes I think I was born backwards... you know, come out of my mum the wrong way. I hear words go past me backwards. The people I should love, I hate, and the people I hate....." — Effy
When asked by Michelle why she never speaks, she simply doesn't answer. Tony sarcastically remarks that she is participating in a 'sponsored silence'. On her blog she says that her parents sent her to a counselor for withholding her speech. It is implied in the first and later episodes that she speaks to her parents very occasionally, although after Tony's accident she starts speaking again. Upon expressing antisocial attitudes to others to Tony he snidely tells her that she "doesn't fool him".
Effy is one of few characters in the series who has broken the fourth wall, having looked straight at the camera and commenting or smirking in some episodes.
By the third season, she is considered to be the queen bee at Roundview, having shed her mute state and continuing to be best friends with Pandora Moon. She eventually catches the eyes of best friends James Cook, Freddie Mclair, and JJ Jones, where much of the season revolved around their complicated love triangle- although it quickly reduces when JJ abandons his pursuit of her, convinced correctly that the conflict is destroying their friendship.
In the fourth season, Effy finally chooses Freddie, which causes Cook to lash out, eventually causing himself to be sent to prison. She experiences a subsequent breakdown and attempts to kill herself. Although she goes to therapy with John T. Foster, he secretly wants her for his own self and tries to alienate her from all her loved ones, even killing Freddie to do so. By the end of the series, Effy reverts to her former self and re-connects with Cook as a friend, although she misses Freddie and sheds tears when reading his notebook full of the words "I love her". Effy also forms a surprisingly strong friendship with Katie Fitch in Season 4, considering they were rivals during much of Season 3.
On her official Skins page, Effy claims she is distantly related to the 17th century French aristocrat called Cecile DeLacroix, who was beheaded during the French Revolution. She also says her favourite smell is petrol, and describes a peculiar talent of being able to pick up objects with her toes. Her best friend is odd girl Pandora Moon, who despite their differences, "gives the detached and cool Effy a heart."
Character history
Series 1
Effy comes home in the early morning. ("Tony")
In "Tony" Effy is seen one morning briefly walking home at the beginning of the episode, apparently from partying the night before. Her brother Tony distracts her father so that she can sneak back into the house, a routine they are both clearly familiar with. She displays familiarity with most members of Tony's social circle, although as with the rest of her family she communicates via gestures and expression rather than speech.
She appears briefly in "Jal"; when Tony and Michelle delay Michelle's shopping trip with Jal (as they are obviously going upstairs to have sex) Effy smirks, not taking her eyes off the TV.
In "Effy", Tony is forced to care about someone other than himself for once when Effy -- one of the only people he cares about - disappears. When Effy and Tony are having a meal with their parents (it being their father's birthday), they are both grinning at each other whilst their father tells them a story they've heard many times before. After they fail to decipher a board game whose instructions were poorly translated, Effy takes it upstairs and melts one of the game pieces with her lighter. Later on, we see Effy sneak out the house and Tony, seeing her go, climbs into her bed wearing her red and black striped socks and hiding under the cover, only socks exposed, so that when their parents come in, they think they see Effy fast asleep and leave her be. We see Effy, and her rather talkative acquaintance, meet up with some boys who know Effy. One of the boys is called Spencer (played by Tom Payne), and him and Effy end up kissing and taking pills together, swinging from the rafters of a construction site. They are arrested, but quickly released. Effy ends up being taken to a sports hall where she takes drugs through a needle, speaking her first line in the whole series before passing out.
Josh Stock had been the one to orchestrate the event, so he could get revenge on Tony. Having Spencer break Tony's phone, Josh promises that she will only get to a hospital for her apparent OD if Tony has sex with his unconscious sister, relating to Tony's scheming last week. Eventually, Tony is in tears in just his boxers, after Josh strips him down, begging, and Josh relents, having only wanted to see Tony in such a pitiful state (perhaps to prove he would not stoop as low as Tony). Sid arrives to help, and he and Tony take Effy to hospital where they and her parents are told she has taken clean pharmaceuticals and will be fine.

In the series finale, we learn her parents have moved her to the private school which Josh and Abigail Stock attend in the aftermath of her drug episode. Michelle, who visits her to ask for advice, presumes they did this in order to correct her previously unknown wild behavior (although both she an Effy find this amusing as she is obviously not going to change her ways) More layers to her character appear as she derides Tony verbally as a wanker for his treatment of ex-girlfriend Michelle, who had come to her previously in an attempt to understand Tony. She witnesses as Tony is hit by a bus, and screams in horror, crying silently as the finale takes place.
Series 2
In the second series, we learn that Effy has now begun to speak openly, at least amongst her family and presumably among others as well. She also continues to party, as seen in the first episode of the second series, despite the events of "Effy" where both she and Tony were put through a traumatic experience. In "Maxxie and Tony" she seems impatient with her father for his inability to shed his protectiveness of Tony and frightened by Tony's occasional fits of rage at his useless state.

In the sixth episode "Tony" it becomes clear that she is looking after Tony since his accident, where she is seen comforting him from his nightmares by reading him Greek myths. She also speaks to Michelle and Sid, but is fairly unfriendly with both of them, probably because they have been unable to handle it and have drifted away, or likely simply out of loyalty to her brother. Later, at least part of it is a result of their newfound relationship. She also does her best to keep Abigail Stock away from Tony, although it is ultimately Sid who drives her away for good.
In "Effy", Effy is seen walking around the house smoking a spliff before school, where the house is clearly in disarray. Her father is in France for business, and her mother is depressed from Tony's accident, where she has seemingly taken to abusing pills and laying in bed all day. Effy on the other hand has taken on the role of a parental figure somewhat, where she is seen inexpertly washing and drying her and Tony's clothes, and looking after her mother. When she and her brother observe Anthea sleeping, Effy casually remarks that love is good for absolutely nothing, but Tony ( who has regained his former personality) replies that she doesn't fool him.
Effy meets her new friend Pandora Moon. ("Effy")
At school Effy's art teacher appoints Effy to the task of helping new girl Pandora Moon, and explains that she must do well on her GCSE Art coursework or else she'll be expelled. Although Effy clearly objects to the former, she allows Pandora to follow her around, and even takes her home with her. Effy's poor grades do not reflect her intelligence (academically, she is nearly as smart as her brother and a lot shrewder) but her lack of drive due to being in an environment she dislikes. Back at home Tony receives a parcel from Michelle, which is actually the watch (now broken) he gave her for her birthday, prompting him to become further frustrated with Sid. Sid explains to Effy his problems, in which she agrees that in exchange for doing her GCSE Art coursework, she promises to sort out Sid's struggling social enterprises; specifically concerning his love for the estranged Cassie.
Effy, with Pandora in tow, goes to pick up drugs at Cassie's where she inquires about her relationship with Sid, but otherwise doesn't probe the subject. While Pandora is shocked by Cassie's blatant promiscuity with both men and women (obviously revenge against Sid) Effy takes it in stride. She is seen taking drugs to a club, where she sells the weed and is also seen by Tony selling Michelle's watch, prompting him to be angered with her. It is revealed later that Effy didn't sell it however, but instead had it repaired and sent back to Michelle with the word "forever" engraved in it, softening Michelle enough to speak to Tony again. As for Sid, Effy sends an acquaintance of hers called Jake to Cassie's -- knowing the chances that they would sleep together -- and takes a series of photos through the window. She scatters the photos around Sid's sleeping form, prompting him to finally confront Cassie, where the two subsequently make up.

t school Effy doesn't use Sid's artwork he created for her, but explains to her teacher that her GCSE Art coursework is conceptual, in which she used an array of emotions -- referring to her recent experiences helping others mend their relationships. She instead gives Pandora credit for the artwork Sid created, knowing- and probably hoping- she will be expelled and returned to her old school. Realizing this, her art teacher sympathizes with her and reccomends an artist to her. At the end of the episode Effy's father arrives home to a clean house, and his wife in a elegant state, all presumably done by Effy.
In the finale of the second series, "Everyone", Effy is seen in the final shot before the credits, smirking at the camera and smiling while lying under Tony's duvet cover, foreshadowing her presence as the lead character in the third series.
Series 3
Effy's father drives her to her first day at Roundview College, but gets into a car accident after driving over a bike in the road as a result of Freddie McClair's daredevil skateboarding. Effy waits silently in the car as her father engages in an argument with an elderly bystander, where she catches the eye of best friends Freddie, Cook and JJ.

At college Effy waits outside with her best friend Pandora, where she observes twins Emily and Katie come into school with mild interest. During a welcoming ceremony in the auditorium/gym, Effy and Freddie make eye contact again, but it is also apparent that Freddie's friend JJ is also interested in Effy when he mistakes her looks directed to Freddie for himself. When Freddie attempts to engage in conversation with Effy at her locker, explaining that he'd like to get to know her, she warns him that his best friends Cook and JJ want the same, which will likely make things "complicated". She then gives him a list of all the things they're not supposed to do in school, and whoever -- Freddie, Cook, or JJ -- completes it first before the day's end, she'll grant an opportunity to "get to know".
Outside of Effy's class she and Pandora are formally introduced to the twins Katie and Emily from before, where Katie's arrogant personality makes a bad impression on Effy. In class, after the teacher asks students to introduce themselves and share a single unique fact, Effy reveals that she suspects her mother is having an affair. At Freddie's turn, he reveals he met a beautiful girl, referring directly to Effy. By the end of the day, Cook is the only one to have completed everything on the list Effy had given them earlier, with the exception of sex and drugs in school. Effy excuses herself to go the nurse's office, prompting Cook to follow, where they light up spliff and the two have sex.
In "Cook", the second episode of the series, Effy and best friend Pandora, as well as her new acquaintances from school Katie, Emily, and Naomi celebrate Cook's birthday party at a pub, where Cook's best friends Freddie and JJ are also present; Cook's appalling behavior quickly causes the mood of the party to plummet. Later on they manage to get into a posh party, where Effy goes into the bathroom and snorts drugs, but eventually they flee when a fight breaks out. When Cook proposes sex with Effy, she rejects him.
In the following episode, "Thomas", Effy's suspicions from the first episode are confirmed when she catches her mother post-coitus with her father's boss. She also helps new friend to the group Thomas sell drugs so that he may pay money off to gangster Johnny White.
In "Pandora" Effy's parents argue after her father discovers her mum is having an affair. Effy and Pandora witness the scene, upsetting Effy so much that she runs away. Later on they go to Pandora's house in which she is holding a "girls only" pyjama party. Although Pandora makes it clear that drinking, drugs, and boys will not be tolerated, Effy both allows and encourages Katie to mix powdered MDMA in the brownies during preparation. Effy and Pandora's unknowing mum are the first to get trashed, prompting the distraught Pandora to lock herself in the bathroom for the rest of the night. Effy becomes upset and frustrated with herself when she realises she has upset Pandora, but otherwise continues to party (which has grown since Katie's boyfriend has brought friends). To drown her emotions she seeks out Cook (who, like her, claims 'not to give a fuck for anything') and has sex with him; they accidentally discover Pandora's mother is having an affair with her next-door neighbor. Afterward, Effy spots Freddie emerging from the house with a panicked JJ; she goes after him, but he rebukes her for leaving JJ alone. She tries to get Freddie to stay, apologizing for her behavior, but he is convinced that she has chosen Cook and takes JJ home, prompting the disconcerted Effy to leave the party. The next morning Effy and her mother Anthea share a moment in the kitchen, in which the two are now alone since her father left; her mother's remorse compells Effy to forgive her. She then goes to Pandora's house to (presumably) apologise, only to catch Cook flirtatiously saying goodbye to Pandora, before she kisses him and sees him off. Effy confronts Pandora, to which Pandora finds the courage to tell Effy that she knows nothing about her or her family, explaining that Effy doesn't put enough effort into their friendship and that Cook is too wild for anyone to consider making commitments to. Effy agrees, and leaves just as Thomas reappears- creating a new complication for Pandora.

In "Freddie", Effy arrives in Freddie's garden and asks to be allowed into his shed. Inside, the two share a spliff, but are quickly joined by the arrival of Cook and JJ. When Cook invites Effy to leave to have sex with him, she sarcastically rebuffs him, causing him to angrily insist that she leave. Afterward, as Freddie returns a bracelet to her during yet another argument between her parents, he suggests that they would be "good together". Effy denies this by claiming she would break his heart. Later in the episode, Freddie seeks out Effy at the water-park, where she is escaping from her turbulent home situation. The two share a passionate kiss mid-water, where Freddie tells her how he feels about her. Nevertheless, by the end of the episode Effy has returned to Cook, and she and Cook watch from her bedroom window as Freddie watches from below before angrily leaving, his friendship with Cook destroyed by the events of the episode.
In "Naomi", although there is apparent tension between Effy and Freddie, she and Pandora seem to be on better terms with one another. Effy observes Cook flirt in class, aware that he has sex with others, to which she has no objections. At the end of the episode she is seen celebrating Cook's win as class president.
In the next episode, "JJ", JJ finds the courage to go to Effy's home and confront her for severing his, Cook, and Freddie's friendship. Although he politely pleads her to stop, she apologetically cannot guarantee him that she will. JJ also admits that he loves her, and Effy expresses sentiment that she would like to be his friend. Later on outside of a club, Naomi and Effy share a brief moment where the Naomi is insecure about her sexuality and feelings for Emily, but Effy doesn't judge her. In turn Naomi cleverly points out that Effy is in love with Freddie, much to Effy's discomfort. Cook, high on JJ's latest medicine, accidentally reveals that he knows Effy loves Freddie and not him; Freddie is shocked by this revelation.

In her central episode, Effy's position as 'queen bee' has been at least partially usurped by Katie, although she does not seem to mind this and her friends still like her. Although she initially attempts to suppress her feelings for Freddie, it becomes clear to her that her relationship with Cook has no genuine feeling left in it, even the sex. she is prepared to break up with Cook — which she does without informing him — and confront Freddie with her feelings, but she is discouraged by Freddie's new relationship with Katie. When the group goes camping in an area of the woods known as Gobblers End, they encounter a ruough gang of poachers at a gas station, who subsequently follow them and attempt to intimidate them; Effy is the only one who stays calm in the crisis. Effy tells the gang that she found shrooms which angers Katie who then sets of into the woods. Soon after, the uninvited Cook shows up and attempts to frighten the gang by stealing their belongings. After seeing that none of them, even Effy doesn't want him there, he bitterly reveals severel secrets the gang had been keeping from each other, including that he and Pandora have apparently been sleeping together behind Effy's back (Effy only knew apart the time at Pandora's party while Cook had accidentally told Thomas when he was high).
Once Cook leaves and Pandora and Thomas no longer talking, Effy then starts "tripping" and seeing insects on her skins due to the negative reaction to the shrooms. She then runs into the woods and is followed by Freddie who eventually loses her. She eventually finds Katie wondering in the woods, which Katie decides to start to mess with Effy's head, Katie then pins her down before attempting to choke her, telling her that Effy will never be better than her and that she needs to leave Freddie alone. Effy, still under the influence of shrooms, picks up a rock and strikes Katie in self defense, knocking her out.

Afterwords Effy wanders back to the campsite when she runs into Freddie. After a few tense moments, they have sex for the first time. However the next morning when the gang notices that Katie is missing, Effy becomes extremely anxious, but she does not tell anyone about what happened in the woods. Eventually, Katie is found and taken to hospital, where Freddie — among others — learn that Effy hit Katie (but not the reasons why), thus turning against Effy for thinking she attacked Katie without merit. Effy then leaves in a car driven by Cook, who doesn't know where they are or where they are going, only that the two of them are going together.
It is learned in the finale that Cook has been bringing Effy to "one small, shitty town after another" for weeks, and Effy is becoming gradually more dissatisfied with this seemingly aimless wandering. Cook, however, tells her that this is the town where his father lives. While Cook is content to end their journey here, Effy grows worried for Cook when she sees how his father manipulates him, prompting her to call Freddie for help — and telling him that she loves him shortly before hanging up. When Freddie and JJ arrive, they decide that the fate of the boys' relationships with Effy should be decided by the small town's race. JJ, who wins the race, takes charge and demands that they solve their problems once and for all, forcing both boys to admit that they each love Effy and telling her that she must choose between them. Although Effy doesn't say anything, her "look says it all" when her gaze lingers over Freddie, prompting Cook to leave in a fury. When Freddie and Effy are alone, they makeup and have sex. The following morning Effy, Freddie, Cook, and JJ begin their journey home.
Series 4
Effy in Series 4
Over the summer, Effy goes with her mother to Italy, breaking up with Freddie due to the guilt she feels from the pain caused to Katie and Cook and does not contact anyone.
In "Thomas", Effy does not come to the first day of school and the others assume she is still in Italy. It is revealed at the end of the first episode that she is back in England. She is with Pandora at her house comforting her after Thomas shows up. Pandora is the only person to know that Effy has returned.
In "Emily", Effy returns to college, sits next to Freddie and steals one of his chips. They talk for a while and Effy reveals that it's him she was thinking about all summer. She then hugs Cook while Freddie watches. Emily then asks Freddie "can you, can trust her?". Later at a party Effy is dancing with Freddie and kisses him- revealing that she has re-started her relationship with him. Cook sees this and lashes out at a fellow party-goer and headbutts JJ. Effy and Freddie see him fighting and leave.
In the following episode "Cook", Effy and Freddie kiss; this is noticed by Cook, who tells Freddie to fuck off when he tries to talk to Cook after he is expelled. Effy comes to see Cook in prison and tells him she loves Freddie. He asks her "how is the love?". Effy replies saying that it messes with your head but she's giving it a go. Cook then asks her to give JJ a message for him, apologizing for hurting him- which he did not remember. As Cook is being taken to prison at the end of the episode. Effy catches his eye and simply nods her head.
Effy in Series 4
In "Freddie", Effy's mother has gone on an extended vacation, leaving Effy all alone. Freddie and Effy stay there, doing drugs and having sex. Eventually, Effy begins acting erratically, cutting out pictures of death (telling Freddie that he found her "porn stash") and pasting them to her mother's bedroom wall while mentioning creatures coming for her. She decides to throw a "goodbye party", causing much of the gang to question what is wrong with Effy. During the party, Freddie in a panic because he can't find Effy, breaks her door down and sees her hiding under the bed, visibly shaken. She tells him that he is the only one she can trust.
After Freddie clears the party out, Cook remains, having escaped from jail prior to the beginning of the episode. However, when seeing him, Effy begins to freak out, yelling at him to leave. Freddie starts to think that Effy is developing psychosis as well as manic episodes; something his mother also dealt with. He asks his grandfather for advice, and Freddie attempts to help her. he decides to take Effy on a trip, taking her to a secluded field. While there, she says that the creatures are coming for her and that she used to be stronger (thus able to fight them off) but being with Freddie had make her susceptible to them. She sees a group of people walking toward them and began screaming, believing them to be the monsters she spoke to Freddie about. Freddie scares them off. At her insistence, Freddy drives Effy home where he sees her mother talking to a police officer. Not wanting to give up on Effy yet, Freddie turns around and begins to take Effy somewhere else so she will not be arrested.
On the way to another location, they run into the Judgment Day parade that is taking place. The amount of people in demonic looking costumes begins to freak Effy out, thinking they are the creatures finally coming to claim her. She blames Freddie for bringing her (thinking it was intentional) and runs away. Freddie tries to follow but loses sight of her in the large crowd, however he runs into Cook and asks him for help. Katie, who is dancing on a float, sees a distraught Effy and rescues her, and calls Freddie over to take care of her. Freddie and Katie take her to visit his grandfather.
Later that night, Freddie, Katie, and Effy go to visit his grandfather. While Freddie and Katie talk to him, Effy sneaks out to use the bathroom. Freddie, distraught once Katie tells him that Effy isn't opening the bathroom door (having been gone for an extended period of time), finds the bathroom she went to. Kicking the door open, he sees Effy lying on the floor unconscious with her wrists slashed. She is taken to hospital to be treated. When she wakes up, she rebuffs Freddie, telling him to leave her alone. On the way out, Freddie runs into Effy's mother. Sharing a smoke, she says that Effy needs both of them now, to which Freddie replies that Anthena is going to have to take care of Effy alone, and runs off. Freddie then goes back to Effy's home, rips all of her "death" pictures off the wall, and burns them in a bonfire outside. Cook shows up and comforts a distraught Freddie, and tells him not to give up on Effy.
Effy in series 4
In "Effy", she is recovering in a psychiatric hospital, where her shrink (named J.T. Foster) forces her to talk about her past memories of Tony (referencing the "Finale" episode of Series 1). Later, her mother brings her some items (one of which is Freddie's) and her mother commends her for getting better. Foster, after hearing the story, makes Effy imagine the same senario, but have Tony not be hit by the bus. Naomi ends up visiting Effy, discussing her problems with Emily. Effy tells her to imagine that she and Emily's problems didn't happen (similar to what Foster told her to do), to which Naomi is confused, stating that it did happen, and nothing can change it.
Later, Effy is seen in a meeting with Foster, where instead of telling a personal story she recites a scene from the film "E.T." Foster then tells Effy that he thinks it's okay for her to go home, to which Effy is opposed about. Foster tells her to keep her routine and to not drink or do drugs, and that he'll be seeing her twice a week. Effy returns home, with her room completed clean and she and her mother have an awkward conversation. She unpacks and then goes to visit Freddie, who is very excited to see her.
Inside Freddie's room, she and Freddie talk. He asks her why he wasn't allowed to see her, to which she replied that Foster had forbidden anyone from seeing her, as it was part of her treatment. When Freddie asks what did Foster do that was so special, Effy replies that he took away all her bad memories and made them good. Freddie is angry, finding out that Effy had bad memories of him. Effy consoles him, stating that now that all the bad memories were taken away, all she feels for Freddie is love. After having sex with Freddie, Effy returns home, and begins taking her pills.
The next morning, Effy returns to school and is seen walking hand in hand down the hall with Pandora, walking into the auditorium to get their A-Level scores. Effy tells Doug that she wants to retake them, to which Doug tells her that Mr. Blood wants to see her. In his office, Mr. Blood tells Effy that they are going to pass her, giving her high marks on all her exams (even though she did terrible on them) because it will keep the school's average test scores up so they can get more funding. She meets again with Foster, telling him that she hates that she has to lie, stating that it feels like she is cheating in life.
Effy in series 4
Foster tells her that her scores aren't the problem, but that she's still striving for happiness. He tells her that there are things happening in her life that are bigger than scores, friends, or love. Effy is seen standing outside the pub (the one used in the Series 3 promo trailer), and after a few moments walks inside. It turns out that the gang has thrown a party to celebrate getting their A-Level results. As part of the party, everyone reads out their scores, with the exception of Effy. Effy stands up and tells the gang that is doesn't matter. She tells that gang that although she thinks that they are all great, she's had enough.
She tells Freddie that everyone needs to make sacrifices, and that everyone is in a different place now. She tells everyone that she is saying goodbye, and leaves. She runs into Cook and after an argument, Cook tells her that he would redo the last two years all over again, and that he still loves her. Effy tells him to piss off and leaves. She then goes home and takes her pills, and sees Freddie's name disappear from her white board. Effy is then seen in another session with Foster, and he is doing some hypnosis techniques on her. However, these techniques are being used to erase her friends from her memory, as Foster is "taking" those memories away. The next morning, Freddie confronts Effy and they get into an argument. Effy tells him that she went mad when she was with him, but Freddie says that that's what loves supposed to do.
After Freddie leaves, Effy takes her pills but begins to freak out, opening all her drawers, until her mother gives her her stuffed giraffe (which was what Effy was looking for). Later, she and her mother have a heart to heart. The next morning, she is at a park, and Cook sits on the bench next to her. As they are talking, Cook mentions that Freddie calls him about her (and calls her "Ef"). Effy looks confused, asking who "Ef" is. Cook thinks she's joking, and says that he's mistaken and that she isn't Ef. Effy smiles and tells him that he's right. Looking confused, Cook asks her what her name is, to which she replies "Elizabeth". Cook realizes that she doesn't remember anyone in the gang, so he reintroduces himself as James (his first name).
He takes her to a party, and they talk. Effy mentions that she normally doesn't go on a date with someone she just met. Cook goes along with it, not telling her that they have already met. She then tells him that she wants to do something bad, and Cook replies that she's come to the right person. As they walk down the street, they end up at the street where Tony got hit by a bus. Effy's memory begins to get jogged, and she begins remembering. Cook, not understanding that Effy really didn't remember him, tells her that she wins (thinking it was a game). Effy is confused, but Cook tells her that they have met, dated, and had sex. Effy tries to deny it, but Cook brings up things only someone close to her would know.
Effy finally remembers her brother being hit, but she begins to freak out. She doesn't know what's wrong with her, not knowing
Effy at the end of the Series
if things did or didn't happen. Cook slaps her to "wake" her up, and Effy wants him to do it again. After pushing Cook, she runs off, with him chasing her. She runs into the freeway and gets almost hit by a car. Cook saves her and she kisses him. Effy remembers everything and tells Cook to get her to Freddie.
She passes out, and when she wakes up, apologizes to Freddie and they reconcile. She tells him the voices have started up again, but Freddie says they'll handle it together. When Foster enters the Effy's room, she freaks out and tells Freddie she doesn't want Foster to be her shrink anymore. Freddie runs him off and he holds her hand until she falls asleep, whispering "I love you" to him again and again as he cries.
Unknown to everyone, Foster is obsessed with Effy and was using his methods in order to keep her (making her forget everyone else she ever loved). Because of this, Freddie later confronts Foster, who beats Freddie to death so he can get closer to Effy.
In "Everyone", Effy gets released from the hospital, with Foster wishing her well and stating that he hoped to see her again- although he is leaving his position. Meanwhile, Freddie hasn't been heard of for a week, and everyone thinks he ran away (due to the packed bag in his room). After Cook recieves Freddie's notebook from Karen, which hints that Foster may be involved with Freddie's disappeance, he tells Effy. Effy's story ends with her being comforted in the knowledge of Freddie's intense feelings for her and celebrating his birthday with all the gang in his shed. Meanwhile, Cook has gone to discover Foster's involvement in Freddie's disappearance.
Series 7
In the years since her last appearance, Effy, now 21, seems to have gotten over her previous issues and has matured into an ambitious young woman with a successful career as a hedge fund manager. She has also moved to London and has become flat-mates with Naomi.
In "Fire: Part 1," Effy works as a receptionist for Hewitt Morris. During breaks, she forgently fends off the attention of Dominic, a mousy kid who works in the opposing trade center. At home, she deals with her now stoner flatmate Naomi. As Naomi sleeps, she goes on late-night escapades, much like her old habits in college. Victoria, who's having an affair with Effy's boss, Jake, uses one of Effy's ideas during a meeting driving Effy mad. Effy then brings Dom back to her flat to gain information about the trade. To climb higher up the work ladder, Effy takes a meeting with one of Victoria's clients. Jake, rather than firing Effy, gives her a shot at trading. Effy, now a trader notices her shares are falling. Dom gives her illegal information and she invests heavily in shares making 1.2 million pounds for the company. Jake and Effy soon embark on an affair. Naomi tags along for Effy's meeting with two traders and leaves disgusted at how Effy let them treat her with disrespect. After a particularly long night, Effy wakes up to find Naomi upset and crying on the roof. Naomi has found out she has cancer.
In "Fire: Part 2," Effy is arrested on insider trading charges and is sent to prison. Emily visits Naomi and has to bridle her rage towards Effy for not telling her sooner about Naomi's current fate and it is presumed that Naomi dies from her cancer. The episode ends with Effy taking responsibility for her actions and smiling on her way to prison.
