Emily Fitch is a fictional character in the television series Skins, and is played by Kathryn Prescott.

Her real life twin Megan Prescott plays her on-screen twin Katie Fitch.

Characterization[]

Emily is Katie Fitch's twin sister, who she is younger than by a few minutes. While they were young, they developed their own cant-style language that only they understand.

Emily is initially presented as being very quiet and a "doormat" to her sister, Katie. She is often bullied and taken advantage of by Katie. As the show progresses, Emily begins to come out of her shell and strives for individuality. Much of this is due to her becoming okay with her sexuality and her feelings for Naomi Campbell.

"Well... I do want you so be brave and want me back!" — Emily to Naomi

Much of the third series deals with her dealing with her sexuality and coming out to her friends and family. Up until "Pandora", Emily maintains that she is straight, but is convinced by Naomi to accept her sexuality. By "Naomi", Emily has accepted that she is a lesbian- despite still being afraid of Katie's reaction- and she and Naomi share their first sexual experience. By the end of the series, Emily comes out to her family and she and Naomi both come out publicly as a couple.

Much of the fourth series deals with Emily and Naomi having problems with their relationship, mostly due to Naomi cheating on Emily while also having contrasting plans on whether they should go to University right after graduating or not. By "Everyone", their relationship is rocky, but Naomi finally reveals her true feelings: that she had always loved Emily and that she is done running, and presents to her two tickets to travel after graduation, and thus she and Naomi resolve their issues - forgiving each other for the hurt they each caused the other over the course of the series.

Character History[]

Series 3[]

In "Everyone", Katie and Emily prepare for their first day; as per usual, Katie walks all over her sister Emily, stealing the clothes Emily had originally laid out for herself. Katie controls Emily so much that even Effy mentions to Emily that Katie treats her like "a doormat". She tries to speak with Naomi about their kiss the year before but is brushed off. Emily is uncomfortable with Katie making homophobic slurs to Naomi, but doesn't say anything.

During "Cook" Emily attends Cook's 17th birthday party with the others. When Katie once again objects to Naomi's presence, Emily produces a cake to direct attention away from them.

Emily and Naomi share a look. ("Everyone")

In "Thomas", Emily finally tells Katie the truth about how Emily was the one who initiated the kiss between her an Naomi, blaming it on the MDMA she took. She and Naomi almost kiss again, but Naomi leaves after rebuffing her advances.

In "Pandora", As Naomi Campbell and Emily arrive together, Naomi urges Emily to admit that she is gay, but Emily denies it. After calling Freddie for help, JJ goes into the house by himself and sees Emily and Naomi kissing. Katie, too, witnesses the pair kissing, but is interrupted when her footballer boyfriend, Danny Guillermo, and dozens of his friends arrive at the house to crash the party.

In "Naomi", Naomi avoids Emily at school and instead meets with her politics teacher Kieran instead. In the students' common room, they are informed of the upcoming elections for Student President. Emily encourages Naomi to run for president, but Naomi refuses. When she arrives at her house, she finds Emily waiting in her bedroom with another registration form Kieran had handed her minutes before. Emily starts to leave when Naomi is rude and standoffish to her—despite taking Emily's advice to enter the elections—but confronts Naomi instead. She tells Naomi that, despite having kissed her twice previously, she is more interested in friendship than a sexual relationship with her, and Naomi invites her to stay for the night.

When Naomi wakes up the following morning, she leaves Emily in her bed as she goes to college, scolding herself while gathering her clothes, saying, "What are you doing!" harshly to her own self. Naomi is doubly humiliated in front of the form when Cook ridicules her and Emily subsequently stands up for her, with Cook claiming, "Sweet innit, gettin' your girlfriend to hold your hand?" as all of the teenagers in the lunchroom burst into laughter. Later, shocked and disgusted that Kieran had kissed her, Naomi finds a note from Emily in her bed, crumples it, telling her to "fuck off!" and then cries herself to sleep. Moments later, Naomi wakes up, finding the note stuck to the side of her face as a result of her falling asleep on it. Getting up and collecting herself, she rips the note off her face, and sees the ink that had previously been on the paper, "Emily slept here ->", and desperately claws at her cheek, hoping to rid her face of the ink. She realises it will not come off, and touches it gently while looking at herself in the mirror. Whilst still staring at her cheek in the reflection, she calls Emily and says, "Can we go somewhere?" with Emily assumingly asking, "Where?", and Naomi replying, "Anywhere."

It cuts to Naomi and Emily escaping to the countryside in the following hour, and cycling to one of Emily's favorite places by a lake, the spot which only Emily, and now Naomi only know about, claiming that it is "peaceful." Emily starts to shed clothing, and Naomi unknowingly says she did not bring a swimming costume. Emily confesses she didn't either, and Naomi turns around, telling her not to look while she's changing. Emily turns around in the opposite direction, and then slowly looks turns to look at Naomi while she is taking off her clothes. Naomi turns around, catching her, while Emily tries to shyly avert her gaze. Naomi says she told her not to look, and they jokingly shove eachother, and Naomi playfully shoves Emily into the lake. Emily beckons Naomi to join her, and Naomi jumps in, shouting that it is "bloody freezing in here!". After swimming in the lake, they light a campfire, as it is raining, and the sky has gone to a dark colour. Naomi kisses Emily after Emily suggets they should do blowbacks, adding a very curt, "everything once,". They both freeze for a short moment after successfully doing blowbacks, and Naomi leans into Emily, and kisses her, shortly after, they undress and they proceed to have sex. Emily wakes up the following morning to find Naomi preparing to leave. She pleas for Naomi not to leave her a second time, and telling her that she should accept that she needs to be loved. Naomi ignores her pleas, and walks away, bringing her bike with her.

That same night, Naomi visits Emily's house, but Emily refuses to open the door, not wanting Naomi to see her after she had been crying. They sit on opposite sides of the door, and Naomi admits that she does need somebody to love her. Emily offers her hand through the door's catflap to Naomi, who finally reciprocates Emily's feelings.

In "JJ" Emily meets JJ at his psychiatric clinic, having come there for advice on how to tell the truth more easily; instead, she gets the same new set of pills as JJ. When she comes out to him with, "Yes, I like girls, I like their rosy lips, their hard nipples, bums, soft eyes... I like tits and fanny, you know. There, I said it and now... [JJ falls to the ground]", in an effort to practice, he faints, but later indicates he has nothing against it. She sympathises with JJ's insecurities around best friends who do not take him seriously (as Katie treats her in a similar fashion) and encourages him to stand up to Freddie and Cook. When they arrive at Freddie's house, however, she is shocked to discover her sister having sex with him. During the subsequent exchange, JJ accidentally blurts out that Emily is gay; Katie immediately begins insisting that she deny it, but she simply leaves. Later, after the party, she is afraid to go home and face Katie, despite knowing her sister cares about her; JJ offers to let her stay at his place for the night and, out of pity, she lets him lose his virginity with her.

In "Effy" Emily attends the gang's camping trip with Naomi, spending a great deal of time with her. Although Katie for once does not object to this (perhaps because she is too busy trying to hold her position as 'Queen Bee' to pay full attention) she orders Emily to stay away from the shrooms Effy found; Emily simply gives her an incredulous look and takes a handful, showing her gradual independence from her sister.

In "Katie and Emily", Emily, disguised as Katie, arrives at college to pretend that her twin sister is returning to school with nine stitches to the head after being hit with a rock by Effy, who has disappeared. In actual fact, Katie is at home, miserable over the loss of her ex-boyfriend Freddie, who only dated her to spite Effy, his real love interest. She begins to take notice of all the hints in front of her, and realizes that Emily is gay. At college, Naomi uncovers Emily's disguise and tells her that she plans to spend the summer alone in Cyprus. When Emily tells Naomi that she will miss her, they kiss in an empty corridor and later find themselves at Naomi's house where they have sex. Afterward, Emily asks Naomi to the college ball, but Naomi, still crippled by insecurity over her sexuality, refuses, leaving Emily heartbroken.

Emilyandnaomi-loveball

Emily and Naomi leave the school ball as an official couple. ("Katie and Emily")

Emily leaves and at the bus stop meets Thomas, who offers her his shoes and jacket and is unconcerned when she tells him that she is gay. He tries to comfort her but admits that he believes it impossible to stop loving somebody, referring to his ex-girlfriend Pandora (at the time). Emily returns home and comes out to her family, telling them that she has been having sex with a girl named Naomi, including that she is also "rather fucking beautiful." Her father, Rob, dismisses it as a joke and her mother, Jenna, is speechless, while Katie tries to deny it. She and Emily have a heated argument, leaving Katie crying.

The following morning, Naomi visits the Fitches' house, but Jenna answers the door. Jenna seems to be rushing, but when she see's Naomi, she smiles, still unaware of the fact that she is Naomi. Naomi tells her she's a friend of Emily's and her name is Naomi. After hearing that, Jenna's grin quickly falters and she insists that she comes inside. She confronts Naomi, convincing her that Emily is not gay and warning Naomi to stay away from her. Naomi looks astonished and claims she is not gay either, and Jenna then tells Naomi to leave her house. After waking up, Katie and Emily reconcile in their own secret language, with Katie initiating it by saying, "Katie sham.", meaning that she is sorry in twin speak and Emily reluctantly agrees to go to the ball with Katie. While shopping for ball gowns, they meet Pandora, who is returning a dress since Thomas has not forgiven her for her infidelity with Cook. The twins run into Freddie and JJ while trying on dresses. JJ reveals to Emily that he told Freddie that he had sex with her, and Freddie inadvertently tells Katie, who was unaware of this. She guilts Freddie into accompanying her to the ball and volunteers Emily to go with JJ. Later, she is furious with Emily for having sex with JJ without her permission, still insisting that Emily is "not gay, [just] stupid". Katie intercepts one of Naomi's phone calls to Emily and tricks Naomi into meeting with her, where she reveals Emily's affair with JJ and warns Naomi not to come to the ball.

As Katie, Emily, Freddie and JJ prepare to enter the ball, Naomi arrives, announcing that she knows about Emily and JJ's fling before she walks in. An upset Emily leaves, while Katie starts a fight with Naomi, where she reveals her deceit against her sister. After overhearing everything, Emily attacks Katie, wreaking havoc through the entire ball. Emily finally overpowers her sister and prepares to punch her, but reconsiders and instead helps Katie to stand up. In front of everybody, Emily tells Katie that she is her own person and that she is in love with Naomi. Katie accepts Emily's individuality and sexuality, and Naomi, no longer ashamed of their relationship, extends her hand to Emily. The couple leaves the ball hand-in-hand and Naomi tells Emily that she loves her too.

Series 4[]

In "Thomas", she is present when the girl Sophia kills herself after taking MDMA. When the entire school is called up for interviews with the police, she complains about how they are being interrogated like criminals. She also asks Freddie if he's heard from Effy, curious as to how their love triangle with Cook finally turned out.

In "Emily", the episode begins with Emily in Naomi's house, looking at her girlfriend's pictures. They are planning a trip to Mexico after college finishes. A package arrives containing a pair of goggles that Naomi has bought for Emily, telling her not to ever forget that she loves her. The couple uses Emily's moped and visits the Fitch house, where a very sad Rob Fitch is cleaning out the garage. Emily talks to her mother, Jenna Fitch who insist they have a conversation about Emily's future. It quickly becomes apparent that, while she does not actively suppress her daughter's homosexuality as Katie previously did, Jenna has definitely not come to terms with it and is extremely hostile towards Naomi. She repeatedly states throughout the episode that Naomi is 'not right for her' and makes a point of trying to sepparate Emily from her. Emily brushes her off, and rides off to Roundview college with Naomi- for the first time, neither seems perturbed by their relationship being public.

The police turn up with more questions about Sophia's death; they are both called in to be interviewed. Their names were listed by the family as close friends of Sophia's, even though they'd never met her. Emily learns that Naomi was dealing powder with Cook the night of the suicide and sold some to Sophia to pay for the motorbike goggles she bought her. Emily immediately confronts Cook over giving their names to the police, but Cook insists that h could not have, and advises them to simply keep their heads down. When Naomi unexpectedly supports him on this, Emily is temporarily pacified, but her suspicion is already turning back from Cook to Naomi.

Effy returns to college and let's Freddie know he's the one she's been thinking about all summer; as she goes over to give Cook a friendly hug, Emily- noticing Naomi chatting with some other girls- asks Freddie if he trusts Effy. Freddie does not answer, as he has become distracted by Effy.

Behind Naomi's back, Emily visits Sophia's family to find out more about the dead girl. She discovers that the Sophia claimed to be best friends with Naomi and Emily. While looking around Sophia's bedroom Emily discovers that Sophia was gay and she finds and takes a wooden box and a university prospectus with acadet army key inside. She leaves and later, when flicking through the prospectus, she finds a photo of Sophia laughing with Naomi. She realises that Naomi did in fact know the dead girl and suspects that she might have cheated on her with Sophia.

Emily interrupts Naomi's class by slamming a picture of Sophia and Naomi taken at the University Open Day, making the latter walk out of class. The two argue about lying and Naomi admits that she indeed met Sophia at a University open day which she was attending behind Emily's back. She insists they just talked and that nothing had happened between them. Still a bit doubtful, Emily tells her about they key she found and Naomi believes it is for Sophia's locker at the army base. They go to the army base and open it and inside they find a shrine to Naomi. They discover that Sophia was infatuated with Naomi, as there was an empty Garibaldi's Biscuits wrapper sitting inside a locker, as well as one of Naomi's old toothbrushes, and a bracelet Naomi lost. They both seem appauled by Sophia going through Naomi's rubbish, and Emily makes up with her after hearing approaching army men marching through the locker halls, and grabbing Naomi's wrist, leading her to closet classroom, and then another door inside, having sex with Naomi in an army storage closet.

Later, Emily has a falling out with her mother- spurred by her father's sudden announcement of his unemployment and her unwillingness to have Naomi in their house- and decides to move out. Katie begs her to stay- even offering to back her up in their arguments- but Emily still leaves. Emily moves in with Naomi and they seem to have put everything behind them, having a Mexican- themed party together. However, when they go to a party later on, Emily becomes suspicious again when Naomi starts talking to other girls. Cook gives her advice on how to deal with jealousy and suggests they have a dance. However, as they are coming out of the bathroom, he sees Effy and Freddie kissing at the party and takes his anger out on a fellow party-goer, Shanky Jenson, and ends up headbutting JJ also before he is finally knocked out and arrested.

At dawn, Emily takes Sophia's wooden box and goes back to the club where Sophia died to meet Sophia's brother, Matt to open up the box. Emily believes the box contains evidence that proves Naomi's affair with Sophia. Soon after Sophia's brother arrives, Naomi turns up and asks Emily to forget all about Sophia and Emily tells her that she can't leave it. Sophia's brother runs to roof and Emily follows him. Up on the roof they open the box and find Sophia's sketchbook. Through Sophia's drawings that depict her one day affair with Naomi, Emily finds out that Naomi did in fact cheat on her. A distraught Emily briefly considers suicide by jumping, but leaves the roof with Naomi crying and calling after her.

Emily talks to her dad about Naomi cheating. After comforting her, Rob tells her that he once cheated on Emily's mum, and that she should not worry, as it gets better after its worse. Emily goes back to Naomi's house, reading a note on the front door saying, "I'll do anything"; she looks up to see Naomi anxiously watching her from the upstairs window. The episode ends with Emily walking through the front door, seemingly following her father's advice.

In "Cook" Emily has returned to Naomi, but she clearly does not trust her; Naomi's pain at this is visible on her face.

Naomily5

Naomi and Emily reconcile. ("Everyone")

In "Katie", the Fitch’s house is repossessed and they are forced to move in with Naomi and Emily, whose relationship is strained. Despite this, Emily is extremely resentful of having her mother Jenna in their house, as she has tried as hard as Katie did to deny her daughter's homosexuality. Now that Jenna is at her mercy, Emily acts as blatantly about it as possible by telling her that this is her house, and she is going to have a barbeque with her girlfriend, and proceeds to forcefully kiss Naomi up against the counter in the kitchen, seconds into the kiss, a disheveled Naomi pushes her away, and Emily walks out of the kitchen and into the barbeque, throwing Katie, Naomi, and her mother one last glance. As Naomi is desperate to repair their relationship and regain Emily's trust, she makes no move to stop her, although Emily is angry with her for letting Jenna into the house. At a BBQ party, Emily gets drunk and high and makes out with another girl to make Naomi jealous, then tackles Naomi and mocks her, leading Naomi to admit to the group she slept with Sophia and sold her drugs- and that Emily is now punishing her for it. When Jenna says she knew Naomi would screw her up, Emily lashes out at her furiously, bringing her to tears and causing her to run out. Katie is appalled by her sister's behavior and slaps her across the face and walks out. Katie then consoles a crying Emily (who is ashamed of her actions) and the Fitches go get Jenna, who had walked back to their old house. Katie enters first, telling her mother about her condition, then that she can't be her mother but that they all love her. Her mother and father reunited, the Fitch family eats pizza on the floor of their former house. While this finally resolves Emily's family problems, her anger and hurt towards Naomi for revealing their personal problems leaves a rift between them despite Naomi's attempted apologies.

In "JJ", JJ lets Lara (his new girlfriend) meet Naomi and Emily. Upstairs, Emily tells JJ that Lara is using him to get back at her ex. JJ comments on Emily’s relationship and how she is potentially sabotaging it by secretly being friends with another lesbian called Mandy, who is clearly attracted to her. Which leaves her in no position to give advice, reducing her to tears.

In "Everyone", Emily (like the rest of the gang) believes Freddie had run away, not being able to deal with Effy's issues. Emily and Naomi's relationship is still rocky. Cook brings to Naomi's party his new girlfriend Arcia, who everyone calls "Effy 2.0". Later, Naomi is confronted with the Mandy, who had drunkenly and innocently spent the night before in their bed with Emily, has been crushing on Emily, and is trying to get her to go to India with her. Mandy (who up into that point, Naomi claims she thought was straight) not only hit on Naomi but told her that she wanted Emily as well; Naomi slaps her and she leaves. Upstairs, Emily cries uncontrollably.

She and Naomi spend the night in bed together, but Emily wakes up to find Naomi staring at her and when she says "I love you" Naomi replies "Don't lie" and suggests that she leave. Later at Freddie's shed, Naomi finally reveals her true feelings: that she had always loved Emily but she was scared by the effect Emily had on her, so she tried everything to lessen it- including messing around with boys. However, she states that she is done running, and presents to her two tickets to travel to Goa, and thus she and Emily forgive one another and resolve their issues. Emily is last seen having a great time at the party at Freddie's shed with Naomi.
